Over the years, the Society of Sin has put on a number of nerdlesque parody plays and revues including “A Midsummer Night’s Wet Dream,” “Once Upon a Tease: A Disney-Inspired Burlesque Show,” and “Glitter is Coming: A Game of Thrones Burlesque Revue.” Fan favorite Harry Potter & the Bedchamber of Secrets is back for its fourth year running one night only-Sunday, September 23 at 7:00 p.m. Due to the high cost of costumes, Society of Sin performers will typically make their own costumes, frequently buying clothing pieces they can transform into beautiful costumes. Even the burlesque revues, which are not as complex as the plays due to the lack of a story-line, still require costumes. Xena also writes the story-lines and dialogues for the burlesque plays that the troupe puts on. These are shows that might only happen for one night or that might get brought back in a year or two with all revamped acts and some new cast members. She admits that she also has a reputation for producing over-the-top themed shows once or twice a month. “Not many other troupes attempt burlesque plays, which require months of rehearsal and planning,” Xena says. To put it simply, nerdlesque is burlesque performance that incorporates pop culture elements and characters. The Society of Sin is best known for nerdlesque, a sub-genre of neo-burlesque. Many of the Society of Sin’s shows are rooted in neo-burlesque, and the troupe itself is very diverse-diversity and body positivity are highly important, Xena says. Today, burlesque is experiencing a revival.Īn outgrowth of classical burlesque, neo-burlesque emerged in the 1990s with an emphasis on the inclusion and celebration of different body types, genders, and sexual orientations. Throughout the mid-twentieth century, Bourbon Street teemed with burlesque clubs which featured now legendary performers such as Blaze Starr, Wild Cherry, Evangeline the Oyster Girl, Tajmah (“Jewel of the Orient”), and Rita Alexander the Champagne Girl. Xena went on to produce, direct, and star in “Arkham ASSylum: A Batman Burlesque Play” which sold out every night and even road-tripped to Jackson’s Duling Hall. While that troupe leader politely declined, many others clamored at the idea. “Initially, I wasn’t looking to produce a show so early in my burlesque career and I pitched it to the leader of another troupe,” Xena reveals. The play almost never reached the stage though. ![]() The Society of Sin, New Orleans’ only burlesque troupe specializing in nerdlesque (more on that later), grew out of a burlesque play Xena wrote following her burlesque debut. That job? Founder and Artistic Director of the Society of Sin Burlesque & Variety. “Watching a crowd of people fall completely under the spell of a performance, find a part of themselves they didn’t know existed, change their minds about what it means to be sexy, open their hearts to new ideas, and throw money all over the stage” is Xena Zeit-Geist‘s favorite part of her job.
